Come and Talk With Me

“My heart has heard you say, ‘Come and talk with me.’ And my heart responds, ‘Lord, I am coming.’” – Psalm 27:8 (NLT) It had been years since I’d heard from him... Then, out of nowhere, he emailed me. In his email, he basically said, “Hey, it’s been a long time since we’ve talked, so I wanted to reach out and see if we could reconnect.” Years had gone by without a word or even an inkling that I would ever hear from him again. As soon as I received the message, I showed it to my wife and she asked, “What are you going to do?”  I responded, “I’m going to email him back right away and say, ‘Yea, let’s talk!’” And that’s exactly what I did! There’s a lot more to that story than what I’ve just shared, but what you need to know is I was extremely eager to engage in that conversation the moment I received that message! And I imagine that the elation and enthusiasm I felt on that day is similar to what David felt when he wrote the words you just read in Psalm 27:8. David heard the Spirit of the Lord speak to him, calling him in. Immediately, David accepted the Spirit’s invitation! He responded with a sense of hurry, almost as if he didn’t want God to think he would let this opportunity pass. You can almost feel the palpitations of his heart jump off the page…

“My heart has heard you say, ‘Come and talk with me.’ And my heart responds, ‘Lord, I am coming.’” 

There are two parts to this verse that really stand out to me. First...

”My heart has heard you say…”

If there’s anything I’ve learned in my years of pastoral ministry, it’s this: People want to hear from God. It doesn’t matter if they are devout believers, casual followers, or even skeptical onlookers. People of all shapes and sizes, from all walks of life, are eager to hear God’s voice. We long to hear the voice of God in our hearts and lives. We want to know what He has to say. When He speaks, we want to be sure that it’s Him who has spoken. Fortunately, God doesn’t leave us hanging. When His Spirit speaks to us, it’s like a rushing wave over our hearts. And that leads me to the second part that fascinates me…

“Come and talk with me.”

The Spirit of the Lord invites David to come and commune with Him. To fellowship with Him. To communicate and connect with Him. Over the years, He has invited me to come and talk with Him. To share what I’m feeling. To sit in His presence. To be comforted by His words. And here’s what I know to be true today: this same Spirit extends this same invitation to you today! He’s inviting you to come and talk with Him. He’s calling out to you, by name, and whispering, “Will you come and talk with me?”  So how will you respond? Will you hear His voice? Will you answer His invitation? Will you respond…

Lord, I am coming.
